And every morning, he ran new variations by her to fine-tune the way he spoke. He never tried patronising. He was tuning the jolly instructor further down. Thanks for that. He had given the drill master and the chummy sympathy guy a miss after the first mild attempts. By now, he was reaching a pretty neutral voice. Practical and informative without any of the animating, cheering up or whatever else people came up with for their workouts.
